Rogue Hunt Rules

The Rogue Hunt logo with subtitle spreading goodness like glitter

Please read these rules carefully. You must agree to them before registering for the Rogue Hunt:

  1. Duration: The 2024 hunt will begin on Saturday, August 3 at 9am Eastern Daylight Time and end on Sunday, August 11 at 9am Eastern Daylight Time. All tasks must be completed and submitted during this time frame to be eligible.
  2. Teams
    1. Teams consist of four to six people.
    2. Each participant may only join one team each hunt.
    3. Each team must complete the task for themselves. Unless otherwise specified, there should be no collaboration between teams. Different images of the same item cannot be submitted by another team. One team cannot send another team to do a task for them. Unapproved collaboration of any sort will lead to disqualification of both teams.
    4. Although we encourage you to reach out to family, friends, neighbors, students, teachers and your social media communities to assist you with gathering props, serving as additional bodies in your multi-person photos and videos, connecting you to people and places, and otherwise assisting you with the completion of the items, we expect you and your team to be the primary participants in completing your tasks.
  3. Registration Fees: Each team member will contribute a $20 entry fee.
    1. Teams composed entirely of Starfish Scholars in Ecuador are exempt – your participation is covered by a donation made in your name. Since your registration is free, there may be alternative prizes (see Rule 13 below).
    2. Registration fees are considered charitable contributions to the Starfish Foundation, Inc. and are therefore tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.
    3. Registration fees are non-refundable.
  4. Extra Costs: We do not have a rule about spending money while completing tasks, but please keep in mind that this isn’t supposed to be an expensive endeavor, and with creativity, you should be able to complete the tasks at little to no cost.
    1. Teams are prohibited from paying others to do tasks for them. Doing so will result in disqualification.
  5. Age Requirement: The hunt is open to anyone age 13 or older (as of August 1, 2024). However, anyone under 18 needs to receive parental consent in the form of a signature at the bottom of the registration form.
  6. Your Work: By signing this form you agree to let the Rogue Hunt and the Starfish Foundation, Inc. have the rights to your photos/videos once posted.
  7. Submitting Items:
    1. All items must be submitted between Saturday, August 3 at 9am Eastern Daylight Time and Sunday, August 11 at 9am Eastern Daylight Time. Any items submitted before or after this time slot will be disqualified.
    2. All items must be uploaded to a google drive folder which will be made accessible to the admins prior to the start of the hunt – additional information about this process will be sent to all team captains and a step-by-step how-to video can be found on YouTube.
    3. You may only submit one submission per team per item. No exceptions.
  8. Item Interpretation: Item reinterpretation should be avoided as a general rule. However, we are inclusive of all abilities both mental and physical. Therefore, you are free to make adjustments when necessary for accessibility reasons without losing points.
    1. If an item says ‘Run with pineapple shoes on’ please interpret this with your abilities in mind. Maybe you wear pineapple shoes on your feet while you wheel about. Maybe you don’t have feet so you put them on your hands, or your head. Or maybe you’re allergic to pineapple, and you use a watermelon instead.
    2. We trust every player to use their best judgment when altering an item as we will not be available to answer requests for clarification.
  9. Sharing Your Work: Please do not share your items or your folder on social media or with members of other teams until after the end of the hunt. Anyone who shares their work during the active hours of the hunt may be disqualified.
  10. Be Safe and Legal
    1. Do not break any laws or local ordinances while completing Rogue tasks
    2. Participants are expected to be respectful to other players, themselves, and people outside the hunt. Anyone found to have physically, emotionally, or psychologically hurt another will be removed from the hunt and banned from all future hunts.
  11. Points: Points will be awarded for each task successfully completed and submitted during the set hours of the hunt.
    1.  Entries may be disqualified, awarded full or partial point value, or bonus points may be added – up to 100% of the item value
    2. Items that are photoshopped or faked to look like you completed them when you did not, will not be given points and may cause a team to be disqualified.
      1. Photoshopping or photo-editing to improve the quality of an image (brightness, vibrancy, white balance, cropping, etc.) is okay.
    3. All points will be awarded at the sole discretion of the judges
  12. Winning
    1. The Scavenger Hunt is a skill-based competition and chance plays no part in the determination of the winning team.
    2. Prize categories will include:
      1. Overall Winner: Awarded to the team that earns the most points.
      2. Altruist Prize: Awarded to the team that does the most ‘good’ (fundraising, acts of kindness, etc.)
      3. Item Specific Prizes: These will be identified when the list drops. Awarded to the individual(s) who best completes (a) specific item(s).
      4. Judges’ Choice Prize – The judges will award an additional prize at their own discretion to an individual or team that they feel deserves recognition
    3. A team or individual cannot win more than one prize in a given year. (For example, if someone is on the team that wins the overall prize, they are excluded from winning the item specific prize(s) and/or the judges choice prize)
    4. Runner Ups will be announced for the Overall Winner and Altruist Prize
  13. Prizes: The total prize value awarded in a given year will be equal to 40% of the total amount collected when registration closes for that hunt.
    1. *Please note that teams composed of Starfish Scholars that qualify for unpaid registrations may only be eligible for alternate non-monetary prizes at the discretion of the Starfish Foundation.
    2. Runner Ups will not receive a prize of monetary value.
  14. Eligibility: The same individual or team is not eligible to win the same prize for the same event twice in a row. For example: If a team wins the Altruist Prize in 2023, all individual members of that team are excluded from winning the Altruist Prize for the main hunt in 2024, regardless of what team they compete on the following year. If an individual wins an item-specific prize, that individual is excluded from winning an item-specific prize in the following hunt.
  15. Cancellation: If the Scavenger Hunt is canceled, participants will be given the option to turn the full value of their registration fees into a donation to The Starfish Foundation, Inc. or request a refund.
    • If a refund is requested fees shall be returned to participants less any third-party transactional costs and the prizes will not be awarded.

By accepting the terms of this waiver, you acknowledge that you will participate at your own risk, that you will use your best judgment when completing tasks, and that you assume all responsibility for your participation in this event.
